NIHL North: One In & One Out At Whitley Warriors

GB Under 18 international Harry Harley has re-signed for Whitley Warriors after a spell in the English Premier League with Peterborough Phantoms.

However, Tommy Ralph - who was on a two way deal with Elite League side Hull Stingrays - will no longer be turning out for the Warriors in the NIHL.

Chelmsford Chieftains - Shut Out Kings!

Chelmsford Chieftains moved into top spot in NIHL South Division 1 after a 4-point weekend in which they achieved two shut outs!

Their previous game to this weekend also ended in a shut out which means that the Chieftains have notched up an astounding THREE shut outs in a row and haven't conceded a goal in 192 minutes of play.  Their last "goal against" came in the 48th minute of their 4-3 away win at Isle Of Wight Raiders.

This is becoming a bit of a habit for the Chieftains. They have notched up SEVEN shut outs this season so far...!

NIHL North Moralee Conference Round Up - Weekend of 25th & 26th January 2014

It was a case of "as you were" at the top of the Moralee Conference after this weekend's games as each of the top three teams picked up 2 points to maintain their relative positions in the table.

League leaders Solway Sharks edged out Blackburn Hawks in a tense 1-0 win on Saturday night while second place Billingham Stars won 6-3 away at Manchester Minotaurs.

Hawks put their Saturday night disappointment behind them 24 hours later as they beat the Minotaurs 4-2 on Sunday evening.

The only team in the top half of the table to lose were Sutton Sting who went down 5-4 to Sheffield Senators 5-4 in the iceSheffield derby.

The performance of the weekend, however, would have to go to bottom club Telford Titans who, having struggled all season, finally picked up their first point of the campaign with a 5-5 draw at home to Whitley Warriors, coming back from being 5-2 down.

Those results mean that 6th placed Senators are now just 1 point behind the Warriors, who, in turn, are just 2 points behind Sutton, who currently occupy the last play-off slot - with all 3 having played the same number of games.

NIHL North Laidler Conference Round Up - Weekend of 25th & 26th January 2014

Deeside Dragons missed out on the chance to close the gap on leaders Solihull Barons as they crashed to a 4-2 defeat away at Coventry Blaze on Sunday night. The Barons - who were without a game this weekend - remain 3 points clear at the top of the table and now also have a game in hand over the Welsh side.

Blaze had a good weekend all round, having not had a game themselves for three weeks. They also won 9-3 away at Blackburn Eagles on Saturday night and are now 4 points clear in third place.

Fourth place Nottingham Lions' attempts to keep up with Blaze received a serious set back, however, as they crashed to a 5-1 defeat at Widnes Wild (in photo).  This was a welcome 2 points for the NIHL's newest team and came after a run of 8 straight defeats.

Hull Jets are now just 2 points behind the Lions after they also enjoyed a 4 point weekend, with a 5-1 win away at Sheffield Senators on Saturday followed up by a 5-3 victory at home to Blackburn on Sunday.

NIHL North 1 News: Hawks' Dunford To Sit Out Season

NIHL North Moralee Conference Round Up - Weekend of 18th & 19th January 2014

Blackburn Hawks continued their outstanding new year form with a 3-1 home win over Sutton Sting which saw them leapfrog the Nottinghamshire side into 3rd place in the Moralee Conference. This was the Hawks' 9th win in a row and brought to an end Sutton's own impressive 9 from 10 recent playing record,

Billingham Stars retained their second place in the table by virtue of their 9-1 win over bottom club Telford Titans. They are now just 2 points ahead of Blackburn and have played two games more.

Elsewhere in the Moralee Conference, Whitley Warriors put an end to their mid season slump by winning their first game since early December with a 5-2 home victory over Sheffield Spartans while Solway Sharks' 11-2 win against Manchester Minotaurs on Saturday night means that they remain 3 points clear at the top of the table with games in hand over all the teams in the chasing pack.

NIHL North Laidler Conference Round Up - Weekend of 18th / 19th January 2014

There were only 2 games in the Laidler Conference at the weekend, both involving teams in the title race,

Solihull Barons maintained their 3 point lead at the top of the table with a 9-2 home win over 6th place Sheffield Senators.  The Barons dominated throughout - notching up an incredible 77 shots to the Senators' 22 in a game that was effectively over by the first break with the home side already leading 4-1.

Second place Deeside Dragons kept the pressure on the leaders with a 6-1 win away at local rivals Widnes Wild.  The Wild actually outshot their visitors but were unable to convert that pressure into goals.  The Dragons now sit a comfortable 7 points ahead of both 3rd place Coventry Blaze and 4th place Nottingham Lions who didn't play this weekend and now both have a game in hand.

New Blackpool Rink Looking Good

In what we feel may well be a world exclusive, we are pleased to report that the building work on the new ice rink on the site of the old TVR factory site in Blackpool appears to be approaching completion and we have been told it is looking “very good” indeed.

Now, I haven’t seen it myself and I make no claim to any amount of cutting edge investigative  journalism on my part here - all this comes by way of a chance meeting and brief conversation in our local Booths Supermarket with local hockey legend Bobby Hall that I thought I might share with you.

“What?” I hear you cry incredulously, “Bobby Hull was in your supermarket..?” To which I reply: no, it wasn’t Bobby Hull – NHL legend of Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets fame – although now that you’ve mentioned him, we might as well leave him in as it will help with the Google search optimisation....

No, this is Bobby HALL - Blackpool Seagulls legend who won the ELN title in both 1980/81 and 1981/2 and also took part in the first-ever British Championship play off weekend at Streatham in 1982. Bob was one of the key movers in getting the new Blackpool Seagulls recreational team off the ground when the SubZero rink opened on Cleveleys promenade in 2011. He was telling me that he had been to check out the new rink building and that it was looking “really good” - and, with a guy of Bob’s experience of ice rinks, if he says it is looking good then I will happily take his word for it.

He said: “The ice pad is looking fantastic – among the best I have ever seen. It has plexi-glass all round, proper penalty boxes... The changing room area is looking good too.”

I asked about the spectators’ facilities as the original outline proposals sounded less than promising.

Bob said:  The spectators balcony has a really good view of the ice.  It’s not like in some places where if you are not seated in the front row, then you can’t see the ice properly. I think they have actually put a lot more resources into doing this than they have been letting on. Looking around, by the time everything is in place, there could be a capacity around the rink for up to 500 people.”

So far so good, then – although we haven’t actually had any official statements yet from the rink owners as to when the venue might be open to the public.

But the good news for ice hockey fans is that there are definitely plans for a new NIHL team to play at the new rink. Nothing has been announced yet about names or personnel but, if the rink building is as far advanced as it sounds - and knowing how keen hockey nuts always are to get a game on - my own guess would be that we will have a new NIHL North 2 team in place for the 2014/15 season.

NIHL North Round Up - Weekend of 11th & 12th January 2014

Blackburn Hawks continued their impressive run of form with two more victories at the weekend, beating bottom club Telford Titans 10-6 in the Moralee Conference on Saturday night and then despatching Manchester Minotaurs 6-1 in the Northern Cup on Sunday evening.

The win on Saturday moved the Hawks up into 2nd place in the table overnight but they were then displaced by both Billingham Stars and Sutton Sting who picked up wins over Whitley Warriors and Telford Titans respectively on Sunday evening.

Billingham's 6-2 win in the North East derby will have been especially welcome to their fans as it brought to an end a terrible run of results where they lost 4 games in a row, scoring only 4 goals in the process.

Solway Sharks remain top of the Moralee Conference with a 3 point cushion over the Stars.  They also have three games in hand, having played no league games this weekend.

In the Laidler Conference (North 2), 2nd placed Deeside Dragons closed the gap with leaders Solihull Barons to 3 points with a 2-1 win at home to Nottingham Lions on Sunday night.  They missed the chance to move to within 1 point of top spot as they lost their game on Saturday 3-2 away to Sheffield Senators.

Lions are now level on points with Coventry Blaze in what looks as if it will be a two horse battle for 3rd place.

In the other games of the weekend, Widnes Wild won 1-5 away to Blackburn Eagles and then lost 3-5 at home to Sheffield Senators.
