Wild Women Head North

The DMUK Widnes Wild women’s team face the tough prospect of a trip to Edinburgh this weekend to face the Caledonia Steel Queens in their first game of the new WNIHL season.

The game is being played at the unusual time of 10.15 pm on Saturday night after the original face off time of 7.30pm on Sunday was deemed unworkable because of travelling back late afterwards.

The Steel Queens are a new team in the league this season, having originally started off as a University side.  Saturday’s game will be their first ever WNIHL league match – and they warmed up for it by winning back to back challenge games against the Ireland women’s national side last weekend.

The Wild Women have, in fact, played the Steel Queens twice before – losing 7-9 in a highly entertaining challenge game at Planet Ice Widnes back in July 2021 and then drawing 0-0 in a short format game at the Bristol Tournament this summer.

Following Saturday’s expedition north of the border, the Wild Women have further away trips - to Leeds, Sheffield and Telford - before their next home game on Sunday 10th December, when they entertain Kingston Diamonds at Planet Ice Widnes.
