Former Widnes Academy U18s captain and senior Wild NIHL player Sam Anderson took up refereeing after he gave up playing in 2020 and has since progressed up the ranks of officiating at recreational, juniors, women’s, sledge and NIHL matches.

He has now refereed his first game at Elite League level when he oversaw Coventry Blaze’s 5-4 overtime win over Fife Flyers on Sunday. Aged just 20, he is believed to be the youngest referee in the professional top tier league.
