The Widnes-based Mayhem sledge team play their first fixture of the 2023 British Para Ice Hockey League season this Sunday 4th June when they take on reigning champions Cardiff Huskies at Planet Ice Widnes, 4.25pm face off.
The Mayhem are one of only 5 Para ice hockey teams across the country and the Widnes rink is more or less unique as its design includes special low level vision boards along the team benches and penalty boxes to make participation easier for sledge-mounted players.
The other venues currently hosting sledge hockey are Cardiff, Peterborough and also Sheffield – who have 2 separate teams the Steelkings and the Steelstings. A long-term highly successful team based in Hull went into hiatus during the Covid lockdown and has yet to re-form, while previously mooted plans for a team of disabled servicemen based at Basingstoke have never come to fruition.
As well as the Mayhem league team, the Widnes rink also plays host to the Great Britain international squad who meet for training sessions once a month.
The 5 league teams will play each other once at home and once away over the course of the summer to decide an overall league champion and there will also be an end of season play off weekend.
