Ice rinks across the north-west have been holding tributes in memory of Peter Sheffield, who died in hospital last weekend as the result of injuries sustained in an accident two weeks earlier.
Peter had been involved in ice hockey for many years and is best remembered for his photography and media work. After helping out behind the scenes at Blackburn Hawks, where his two sons played, he was the official media photographer at Deeside Dragons for a long time - and was always a great help to me personally providing photos for news stories and for my various publications..
He was one of the driving forces behind the British American Sports Network (BASN) who filmed NIHL matches and produced highlights packages for Liverpool Bay TV and BASN’s own YouTube channel.
While mainly being associated with Deeside, Peter was also very active with BASN at Widnes with occasional match highlights videos during the Laidler Division period and more regularly when the Wild’s NIHL matches were live-streamed between 2021 and 2023.
He also took photos at the 2019 play off tournament at Widnes when the Wild won their third Laidler Play Off title in row and was able to record their historic achievement. Sheffield’s most memorable Widnes-related photo is probably the shot of the team (below) celebrating the 2019 play off final with team staff and fans.
