Laidler Conference Weekend Round Up - 24th & 25th January

In the Laidler Conference , the most intriguing question would have to be: who will secure the second promotion place behind run away leaders Solihull Barons?  The Barons were without a game at the weekend but sit 6 points clear of the chasing pack with games in hand.  Telford Tiger look favourites to tame second at present – their 2-8 win away at Deeside Dragons on Sunday moved the back above Sheffield Senators and, while the Senators are having a great season, they have played more games than anybody else and may well drop down once the teams below them play their games in hand.

Hull Jets had the best of the weekend with wins away at Bradford Bulldogs and at home to Blackburn Eagles and the resulting 4 points elevate them right in to the promotion and play odd mix with games in hand.    Nottingham, Widnes and Deeside are all still in with a shout and it will be interesting at the end of the season to see how the double points games have affected the overall league table.

Moralee Conference Weekend Round Up - 24th & 25th January

Blackburn Hawks extended their unbeaten run in the Moralee Conference to 16 games with a hard fought 2-3 win away at Billingham Stars on Sunday.

With Stars beating Sheffield Spartans 2-4 on Saturday and Solway Sharks winning 4-6 away at Sutton Sting, the relative positions at the top of the league table remain the same with but just 8 games left to play and Hawks enjoying an 8-point cushion, it is very hard at this stage to see anybody else depriving them of their first ever league title.
Sharks in 2nd and Stars in 3rd both have games in hand over the teams behind them but with Whitley Warriors beating bottom team Manchester Minotaurs 6-4, the battle for the play off places remains extremely tight. Just two points separate Spartans in 4th and Sutton in 6th so there is still much to play for!

Deeside Dragons Sign New Import

The Deeside Dragons have added a forward import to the roster for the remainder of the season.

Tomas Mitrik - a 26 year forward from Slovakia - has completed the registration process and will be available for selection for this weekend’s game against Telford.

Tomas has been training with the Dragons for a month or so now and head coach Steve Fellows has been keeping an eye on his progress and has decided to give the lad a chance for the rest of the season.

Fellows said: "He is a big addition for us as he is a fast, attacking skater who will score goals for us and give us a big lift. He’ll also help give us some depth which we have sorely been missing. We haven’t played with an import this season and that has been a factor in a few games this season. We've lacked a bit of a cutting edge."

Tomas has been playing in the Rec league for the last couple of seasons and hopefully can make the transition to the next level.

The player said that he is looking forward to the challenge and hopefully can bring something to the team for the rest of the season and future season if all goes well.

Sheffield Spartans & Senators Weekend Reports

SIHA senior teams both enjoyed success on the road this weekend in what were on paper, tricky games, but ones in that they both put in an awesome performance to secure valuable wins.

Sheffield Senators travelled to Telford to face the Tigers and included new signing Alex Jones in their line up as well as Joe Colton making his senior hockey debut with Matt Croyle in goal in the absence of regular netminders Mark Hartley & Bob Browne. These players did themselves justice as did the whole team to claim an important and deserved 4-2 win. Neither team could quite swing the balance of play their way until Sens scored on 16.42 on the powerplay through Tom Humphries. Into the second and a positive start from Senators saw their efforts yield another goal when Joel Aheran fired in to make it 2-0 on 22.55. Telford are clearly a talented team and were making Sens work hard, even more so when they scored two great goals to pull it back to 2-2 through Sean Weeks & Bradley Betteridge. Senators still seemed comfortable and largely in control at times but Telford were always a threat which set things up nicely for the final period with the score at 2-2. The final period opened with both teams looking to attack but Sens seemed to settle a bit quicker to take more of a control of things but as before they had to be on their game to keep Telford out but two nice goals from Tom Humphries to see him claim his hat-trick enabled Sens to see the game out to claim two great points with Matt Croyle getting the nod for Senators Man of the Match for his performance between the pipes.

Sheffield Spartans put in a great team performance to seal a memorable win up in Whitley Bay, one which sealed the head to head series against Warriors. Spartans were more than worthy 6-2 winners that now sees them undefeated in their last six league games.

Spartans were on fire in the first period to dominate proceedings and it’s arguable that the score could have been far greater than it was at 4-0 at the end of the first period with goals for Stuart Brittle, Ollie Barron, Nick Manning & Scott Morris.

Whitley, as expected came out fired up and their enthusiasm wasn’t dampened by Ollie Barron making it 5-0 to Spartans. Whitley’s persistence against an in form Brandon Stones in goal along with a well-drilled defence in front of him eventually paid off to see them pull two goals back through Adam Reynolds & Callum Queenan to give them hope in the final period.

Spartans showed character as they played sensible, disciplined and controlled hockey to both snub out Whitley as well as looking to increase their lead. They had the advantage of a good lead but they kept their heads to control the game to both frustrate and deny Warriors who simply couldn’t get back into the game. One which was rounded off with another well worked goal that took advantage of some slack defending whilst on the powerplay scored by Jonathan Kirk to seal a valuable 6-2 win against their play-off rivals

It was a very good performance by Spartans against awkward opponents who weren’t at their best but it has to be said that was down to how Spartans had played and they fully deserved their win in a game in which for large parts they were the much better team. Brandon Stones once again won the Man of the Match beers, one of many good performances on the night.
It was truly a great weekend for both Spartans & Senators in their pursuit of play-off & promotion success and although nothing is certain from these results, they may just well have a bearing on things in weeks to come and they are indeed a reflection of their potential which current form is confirming; as well as driving both teams forward in their pursuit of glory. They both face tricky fixtures again this weekend as Spartans entertain Billingham Stars at Ice Sheffield on Saturday, facing off at 2.15pm whilst Senators travel to face Coventry Blaze.

Laidler Match Report: Solihull Barons 7 - Widnes Wild 1

For the Sunday night return fixture, Nicole Jackson was selected in goal, with Bobby Caunce also returning. Chris Preston was unavailable.

A big crowd including a sizeable Widnes following,  saw the game open in lively fashion, Filip Supa being sent clear for Wild and Josh Nicholls making a good block. Almost immediately, played switched to the Widnes end - Nicholas Ottoson weaving through the defence and from behind the net he fed Thomas Soar who opened the scoring at 2.26. An error in the Widnes defence saw the same players combine for Soar to score from close range to put the Barons 2- 0 up at 6.42. At 10.12 Kieron Papps added a third, firing low past Nicole Jackson from directly in front of the net. Despite a three goal deficit , Wild were looking to play good attacking hockey. Bobby Caunce broke clear down the right before feeding Filip Supa who fired low past Nicholls to open the Widnes scoring at 14.43.

In a hard fought second period, Barons were the only scorers, when following a defensive error, Soar found Eddie Eaton for a simple tap in at 21.56.Dan Bracegirdle didnt come out for the second period after sustaining a hand injury. Wild continued with their effective counter attacks. Just a minute later Filip Supa was sent clear down the right, only to see his angled shot flash by the right hand post. Two minutes later, young George Crawshaw, again in impressive form, broke through and after seeing his first shot blocked, followed up, only to see his back stick shot clawed away from just inside the right post. After Bruce received a ten minute misconduct penalty and Sam Dunford took a debatable kneeing call, the latter player returned to the ice to break clear and see his powerful shot saved by Nicholls. Again Crawshaw got clear to bring a fine close save from Nicholls, who then made several successive saves as the period drew to a close. An incident involving Perry Doyle near to the Wild bench, brought the second to a close.

Within seconds of the restart, Barons effectively settled the game with Ottoson feeding Soar who hit a one timer low into the net. Two goals inside three minutes from Soar at 45.21 and Joe Henry at 47.44 put Solihull further ahead. Wild continued to press with Supa and Pollitt going closest for the visitors. The never say die attitude of the Wild team was well summed up by Lee Pollitt chasing Ottoson all the way from the red line to prevent the overseas star adding an eighth. This was another fine all round effort from Widnes with the final score not reflecting their contribution to an all action game. Ken Armstrong took the MVP for Wild with Thomas Soar taking the award for the home side.

The team enjoy a rare break before returning to home ice for a vital match with Nottingham Lions on Saturday January 31st - face off 5.30 pm.

Laidler Match Report: Widnes Wild 5 - Solihull Barons 9

Widnes Wild faced their most testing weekend of the season with home and away fixtures against table topping and unbeaten, Solihull Barons. For the home game on Saturday, Wild were without Shaun Dipnall, Tom Revesz and playmaker Bobby Caunce.

The league leaders opened at breakneck speed and they took the lead at 2.57 when Thomas Soar was put clear of the defence. After Filip Supa broke clear and saw his shot saved, Wild equalised at 5.04, Dunford and Ratcliffe combining to allow Ben Brown to fire low to the left past Hewitt. Wild took at 2-1 lead at 7.04 when Lee Pollitt and Filip Supa combined well down the left to feed Joe Greaves who fired into the net from close range. The Barons equaliser came with the visitors down to three skaters following two minor penalties. With Wild pressing, Josh Bruce was sent clear to slot past Greg Ruxton. The visitors took the lead at 11.57 when following a breakaway on the right ,Otterson scored from close in on the right.

After Wild shocked the crowd with an equaliser by Tom Ratcliffe at 21.50, the visitors gradually took control and were 4-3 ahead by 26.15 when following a quick breakout, outstanding forward Joe Henry shot high into the right corner . Within minutes they had taken full control, with further goals from Henry and Perry Doyle, to lead 6 -3. After Slater had scored a seventh at 30.03, Joe Henry completed his hat trick with an unstoppable shot which found the top corner. The speed of the visitor counter attack was proving a major problem for a tiring Wild defence.

Despite a disappointing second period, It was a rejuvenated Wild which came out for the third period. The fans rose to their feet when young George Crawshaw, making his debut for Widnes scored his first senior goal at 45.19. Straight from the restart, Lee Pollitt and Bez Hughes combined down the left for Filip Supa to fire home a fifth Wild goal. Despite long spells of Widnes pressure no more goals were forthcoming and the Barons wrapped up the game with goal number nine at 56.42 - Thomas Soar being the scorer.

A terrific battling performance in the final period, sent Widnes fans home happy. A disastrous six minute spell in the second period was the home sides undoing, but for periods of the game they matched their illustrious opponents. Young George Crawshaw took the Wild MVP for an energetic, skilled and fearless performance.

South 2 Weekend Round Up - 17th & 18th January - Courtesy of Bristol Pitbulls

This week, NIHL2S took us a step closer to being able to answer two questions, one from each end of the league standings.
First, can anyone stop the Slough Jets? Haringey Racers had come closest last November, conceding a game-winning goal inside the last minute. But, Saturday night saw the Jets extend their unbeaten streak from the start of the season with a 10-2 demolition of the London side.
Racers actually opened the scoring and the game remained tight at a goal apie...ce at the first break. But Jets would score seven times in the second period before Racers got themselves back on the scoresheet. Kozic with four and Green with a goal and three assists, but it is at the back that Jets seem to be most frightening. In their fourteen games this season, the opposition have only lit their red light 21 times, an average of just 1.5 goals against per game.
The second question was whether the Invicta Mustangs could avoid going winless the whole season. Given that their remaining opposition is against Slough, Peterborough, Chelmsford and Haringey, Saturday night's home tie against Lee Valley Lions was their most obvious opportunity to try and finally remove that zero from the win column.
But, a 10-5 win to the Lions now makes it increasingly unlikely Mustangs can avoid the ignominy of a winless season as their season-long problem of converting shots to goals remains. Outshooting Lee Valley 47-34 still couldn't get them a win. Indeed Lions scored as many goals in this game as their last five combined.
Racers suffered their second loss of the weekend after being beaten 9-4 at the Chelmsford Warriors Ice Hockey Team. In his first game for the Warriors, Andrius Kaminskas returned 2+2. But, the result beyond the impact that "Bomber" may have brought as no less than six players got on the scoresheet for Chelmsford.
That strength in depth gave Warriors a 5-0 first period that Racers never recovered from. In fact, they scored a further two in the second period before Sam Roberts opened Racers' account with the first goal of his hat trick. As a result, Chelmsford have now closed the gap to Racers to a single point with a game to spare.
In the Western Conference's only game, last placed Bristol Pitbulls travelled to take on the first placed Basingstoke Buffalo. Since Bristol had won in that building earlier in the season, the two teams had had a very different experience. But, Bristol's hopes were high after their demolition of Cardiff Enl Devils the weekend previous.
A slow start by Bristol allowed the home side to skate to a 2-0 lead early in the second period. But, despite heavily outshooting Basingstoke over the last forty minutes, Bristol's finishing let them down with only Jamie Newton and Josh Dolphin finding the back of the net. With the game's points being shared, Basingstoke stay top of the conference, but Bristol climb two places off of the bottom of the table.

South 1 Weekend Round Up - 17th & 18th January

Invicta Dynamos and Chelmsford Chieftains are now level on points at the top of the table after Chelmsford picked up four points beating Cardiff 9-1 at home on Saturday and winning 4-10 away at Solent on Sunday.

The Dynamos came unstuck 6-4 away at Solent on Saturday but a 5-1 win at home to Wightlink Raiders on Sunday means that they keep their noses in front in the title race just for now  on goal difference.  The Chieftains have 3 games in hand and play the Dynamos twice more this season.

3rd place Bracknell Hornets took 3 points over the weekend with a 4-4 draw at home to Milton Keynes Thunder on Saturday and a 0-5 win away against the same opposition on Sunday.

London raider beat Streatham Redskins 6-3 at home on Saturday night and almost repeated the feat away on Sunday. They were 0-5 up after 31 minutes but were then pegged back by a resurgent Redskins who hit six to take the points.

Raiders new signing Slovakian Jakub Kostelansky hit 4 +3 over  the two games.

In the bottom of the table clash, Cardiff Devils beat Oxford City Stars 7-6 and move above them off bottom spot. Both teams have the same number of points but Cardiff have two games in hand.

Laidler Conference Weekend Round Up - 17th & 18th January

League leaders Solihull Barons made it 20 wins in a row over the weekend with back to back win over Widnes Wild 5-9 away and 7-1 at home.

With  3rd place Sheffield Senators winning 2-4 away at second place Telford Tigers  to join them on 38 points it means the Barons were able to pull further way from the chasing pack and now have an 8 point advantage and games in hand.

Hull Jets beat Deeside Dragons 4-3 in a game for double points but the result of the weekend would have to be Bradford Bulldogs' 5-4 win at home to Coventry Blaze.  Their first win of the season  came at the 21st attempt and was sealed in dramatic fashion with the winner coming just 35 seconds from the end.

Moralee Conference Weekend Round Up - 17th & 18th January

Blackburn Hawks extended their lead at the top of the table with a  7-0 win away at Manchester Minotaurs on Saturday night. They are now 8 points clear of 2nd place Solway Sharks with both teams having now played the same number of games.

On Sunday night, the Minotaurs travelled to 3rd place Billingham Stars and once again came out goal-less losing 12-0. Stars are now just 1 point behind Solway with a game in hand.

Sheffield Spartans moved back up into 4th place with a 2-6 win away at Whitley Warriors on Sunday.  The Warriors also lost on Saturday 4-3 away at Sutton Sting, with whom they are level on points in 5th/6th place.

Manchester Minotaurs remain bottom of the table having lost all 15 of their league games to date.

In the ECCN, Solway Sharks lost 2-4 at home to Peterborough Phantoms EPL team on Saturday and on Sunday, Blackburn Hawks beat the Phantoms 8-2 in the final game of the group stage.

Laidler Match Reports: Sheffield Spartans' 4 Point Weekend

Sheffield Senators enjoyed a four point weekend but were pushed all the way on both nights by a hardworking and spirited Blackburn Eagles.

On Saturday in Blackburn, Senators were guilty of not making the most of the chances that they created, in particularly the first two periods; outshooting their opponents 64-25. Tom Humphries opened the scoring on 4.12 only for Eagles to equalise through James Riddoch at 5.49. Both teams had chances to take the lead but Sens eventually did so through Nathan Britton, assisted Sergevs Jegorovs timed 10.59. This was swiftly followed by a great goal from Ben Towler who outsmarted the Eagles defence with a well take effort on 11.17 with assists for Cam King & Martyn Gray. A short while later it was 4-1 when Sergevs Jegorovs scored from Josh Gent & Tom Humphries on 13.58. Eagles didn’t give up and pulled a nice goal back through Adam Lutkevitch to see them 4-2 down at the period break.

At the end of the second period it was 5-3 in Senators favour with Eagles very much still in the game although in fairness Senators should have been in a more comfortable position but some missed chances and solid defence from Eagles ensured there were just two goals difference between the teams. Tom Humphries scored for Sens on 20.31 assisted Nathan Britton & Sergevs Jegorovs whilst Steven Hetherington added one for Eagles timed 24.49.

Senators looked the more threatening of the two teams and made their pressure count to make it 6-3 on 43.24 through Arran Bell, assisted Sergevs Jegorovs & Tom Humphries. Their efforts yielded further reward when Josh Gent scored from Tom Humphries & Nathan Britton on 55.05 but as was the case all game Blackburn never gave up and pulled another well taken goal back through Harry Bolton which was the last real action of the game to see the points go back to Sheffield with Senators winning 7-4 in what was a good game of hockey for which both teams deserve credit for.

Sunday’s game was very much the same that in both teams were clearly up for it and in an end to end start to the game there was little between the two until Harry Bolton nipped in to score a nice goal for Blackburn on 12.54. Senators responded positively to finish the period the stronger team and deservedly equalised with a Tom Humphries powerplay goal timed 15.08, assisted Sergevs Jegorovs & Arran Bell.

The second period was a little scrappy with both teams taking needless penalties as the game had lost its flow from the first period but it was Senators who enjoyed the better of things playing a patient game to put themselves firmly in the driving seat with Nathan Britton scoring on 24.29, assisted Sergevs Jegorovs. A lovely pass from Jonny Bell found Josh Wheway who put his chance away nicely on 31.03 with Tom Humphries scoring again late in the period, assisted Arran Bell to see Sens in front 4-1 going into the final period.

The final period was scrappy with both teams trying to assert themselves with a goal from Lutkevitch giving Eagles some hope at 49.02 however, as in the last period, Senators patience and resilience paid off to see the game out to claim a valuable win and a four point weekend. The now free scoring Arran Bell finished off a nice move from Josh Gent on 54.12 with Tom Humphries quick fire hat-trick goal timed 54.2, again from some great play from Josh Gent making it 6-2 and putting the game beyond Blackburn as Tom Humphries scored in the last minute, assisted Callum Rawson to see Senators run out 7-2 winners and to consolidate their place in second position in the league table.

Moralee Match Report: Sheffield Spartans 3 - Whitley Warriors 3

Sheffield Spartans were once again left kicking their heels in frustration after last minute goals denied them what would have been a deserved victory against Whitley Warriors on Saturday.

In what was an end to end first period neither team could break the deadlock with both teams creating good chances but arguably the better ones fell to Spartans who will feel they should have done better with a couple of them at least, which would have seen them in front. However it was 0-0 with all to play for in the second.

Spartans had Warriors on the back foot for the opening minutes of the period and will again feel that they should have made more of their pressure and chances but Whitley soaked up the pressure to then counter and enjoy a good spell of possession in which they gained the upper hand and were unfortunate not to take the lead themselves. Spartans hit back when a nice play out of defence saw Ross Jordan find Ollie Barron who took his chance well to put Spartans in front on 29.25. Spartans were on top of their game and extended their lead when Stuart Brittle scored on 33.06 from Ollie Barron & Elliott Knell. They didn’t have things their own way though as Whitley were fighting hard to get back into the game and it took some sound netminding from Brandon Stones to ensure Spartans went into the period break with their two goal lead intact but deservedly so.

Spartans had been the better team to this point but the final period was initially more evenly balanced with chances for both teams but it was Warriors who gave themselves a leg up back into the game when Scott Cooper fired home a powerplay goal, the result of a dubious decision against Nick Whyatt for holding, which was timed 44.10 with assists to DJ Good & Callum Watson. Spartans responded well to the goal and Whitley were grateful to Richard Lawson in their goal for some fine saves to keep them in the game but he couldn’t do anything about Stevie Weeks goal timed 51.11; a powerplay goal with a cracker of a shot from the blue line that took a slight deflection past Lawson with assists to Scott Morris & Dougie Jordan.

It was with some relief as Warriors were just starting to gain the upper hand but they weren’t beaten and hit back hard at Spartans, even more so when they pulled their netminder with just under four minutes remaining but Spartans defence were unshakable and were seeing the game out well until Ollie Barron was called for tripping, rather harshly it has to be said on 59.10. Warriors won possession from the face off to score a well worked goal timed 59.23, scored DJ Good, assisted Dean Holland & Simon Leach.

Thankfully Spartans won possession as the clock ticked down and with several options available, including maintaining possession the puck was gifted to Whitley who shot the puck on goal and were quicker to react to actually hit the puck into the net when it should have realistically been cleared. Jamie Tinsley was the scorer with assists on the goal to Adam Reynolds & Dean Holland to see Warriors claim what had looked like at one point, an unlikely point, with the final score 3-3.

Spartans once again were punished for failing to see the game out, a game they should have won but it is also fair to say that had they taken their chances in that first period it could have been a different story but they didn’t whereas when the chances fell to Whitley, they made them count and deserve credit for the way they continued to battle throughout the game and sensibly defended their empty net for over 3 minutes to hit back and share the spoils in what was another good game of hockey between these two teams.

Widnes Wild welcomed Bradford Bulldogs for their first ever visit to the Silverblades Rink on Saturday. Wild welcomed back all their absentees from last week including Slovakian stars, Filip Supa and Pavel Vales. Nicole Jackson was unavailable due to attendance at the Great Britain training camp .

A determined Bulldogs, with a very short bench, opened in determined style, frustrating Widnes with strong defence. Wild eventually found a chink in the armour, when Chris Preston worked the puck from the corner to provide Tom Revesz with a tap in goal at 7.51. Filip Supa was next on the scoresheet. As he broke clear his opponent slipped giving the Wild top scorer a chance to fire high into the top left corner at 13.23. Good work in the corner by Bobby Caunce saw him feed Kieron Strangeway who crashed the puck beyond Jake Higham into the top corner.

The hardworking Chris Preston was next to score, firing high from a rebound at 16.22. The first period scoring was completed at 19.52 when a Strangeway sho was half stopped but crept over the line.

The second period saw a far more physical approach from Bradford. Pavel Vales skated superbly from his own goal  but was foiled by netminder, Higham. The game was becoming nigglyas Bradford battled back into the game. They were unlucky when a shot ricocheted off Ruxton's left post. Wild went further ahead when a Bobby Caunce shot bounced out to Lee Pollitt who shot home from distance at 29.47. Frustration set in and after a scuffle in front of the Bradford net, several players were sent to the bin for roughing. Within a minute, Wild went further ahead - Kieron Strangeway crashing home a hat trick goal. Another Wild goal followed within seconds, Filip Supa blasting home from distance. The eighth home goal saw a net change, young Josh Benstead replacing Ruxton. He was soon in action making vital saves to keep Bradford at bay.

Widnes started the third period in more determined mood. Numerous attacks were repelled by Higham saves but at 54.39 a patient build up allowed Pavel Vales and Tom Revesz to feed Chris Preston to follow up and flick the puck high into the net At 56.04 Tom Revesz created an opportunity for Bobby Caunce to fire high into the net. Inside a minute Shaun Dipnall had fed Filip Supa who finished expertly for an eleventh goal. At 57.09 Dipnall created another chance for Lee Pollitt to find the net. Ben Brown  wrapped up the scoring at 57.37 -  tapping in after Revesz had created another opening. The goal flurry during the last six minutes , gave Widnes their highest ever winning margin but against a much weakened but game Bradford team. Numerous scoring chances were spurned and they managed a clean sheet after Bradford had twice rattled the pipes. There was plenty of effort from all the home players but they will face more difficult challenges in the coming weeks. Kieron Strangeway won the MVP for a fine all round show and a rare defenceman's hat trick.

Telford Tigers picked up 6 points over the weekend courtesy of a 4-7 win away at Coventry on Saturday and a  6-4 double point win over Blackburn Eagles on Sunday but Solihull Barons' 2-6 win away at Sheffield Senators on Saturday means that they still top the table - with a 4 point advantage and games in hand.

Widnes Wild shut out Bradford Bulldogs 13-0 on Saturday before losing 5-1 away at 3rd place Senators on Sunday.  Nottingham Lions leapfrogged Wild into 4th place with their 7-4 win over Coventry Blaze in a game that saw former Elite League player and GB international Warren Tait return to the ice for his hometown 18 years after first making his senior debut for the Nottingham Panthers in the British League in the 1995/6 season.

Laidler Match Reports: Sheffield Senators' 4 Point Weekend

Laidler Match Report: Telford Tigers 2 - Widnes Wild 0

Widnes Wild made their first ever visit to Telford on Saturday, for the first fixture of 2015. A sparse crowd saw the teams take to the ice. Wild were without overseas men Pavel Vales and Filip Supa, Chris Preston and Tom Revesz were also unavailable.

In an end to end first period both netminders made vital saves. The breakout speed of Telfords young forwards was being well matched by the guile of Dunford, Dipnall, Caunce and Pollitt for Wild.

Telford took a controversial lead at 10.50 when a Telford forward appeared to be in the crease. There was a suggestion that the puck came off a foot. Wild made regular raids on the Telford goal but were sorely missing the finishing of Filip Supa.

As in the games at Widnes home netminder Denis Bell had kept the Widnes forwards at bay.
The second period opened with an incident in the Widnes end with players colliding as the puck was cleared. Within a minute a well worked Wild attack saw Bell make a fine reaction save and the netminder made three more saves within seconds to keep Wild scoreless. Telford's breakout speed was a constant threat - a tactic they were using effectively when shorthanded. Caunce, Pollitt and Greaves all saw goalbound shots all well saved by Denis Bell. Wild were applying constant pressure but could not break down the well organised Tigers defence. When Telford attacked Nicole Jackson made several fine saves low down.

In the 36th minute a powerful rising shot from Bez Hughes flashed inches wide with Bell covering the other post. In the final minute of the period Tigers took another tripping penalty but with only seconds remaining Wild couldnt force the equaliser.

The third period got off to the worst possible start. With Wild on the powerplay, water on the ice caused the puck to stop on the point . Outstanding  Telford forward  Jackson Smith broke away and beat Nicole Jackson with a well placed shot. Within minutes Denis Bell had made more great saves as Wild attacked constantly. Bell made another remarkable stop at 49.42, catching high as Lee Pollittt moved on the net.

In the 58th minute, Bobby Caunce broke out superbly from his own end. His back hand shot to the top left corner brought another remarkable glove save from Bell. Callum Ruddick took two minutes for holding an opponents stick at 58.02, Wild again broke out well, bringing another top save from Bell.

This was a hugely frustrating game with Wild matching their second placed opponents throughout but again falling to the highly effective Telford counter attacking. Netminder Nicole Jackson deservedly took the MVP for Widnes after making 33 saves. She was matched by the outstanding Denis Bell for Tigers, who saved all 36 shots.

Head Coach Mark Gillingham said " We have seen two of the best netminders in the National League out there and that is reflected in the score "

Next weekend Wild are at home V Bradford on Saturday and meet close rivals Sheffield Senators in an afternoon face off at Ice Sheffield on Sunday.

South 2 Weekend Round Up - 3rd & 4th January

South 2 East league leaders Peterborough Islanders shut out Haringey Racers 6-0 on their own ice on Saturday night to move 3 points clear of Slough Jets, who have 4 games in hand.

South 1 Weekend Round Up - 3rd & 4th January

Invicta Dynamos remain top of the table after a 9-0 shut out of bottom team London Raiders and Streatham Redskins moved into second place courtesy of wins away at Cardiff Devils and at home to Bracknell Hornets.

Chelmsford Chieftains drop into 3rd place as they didn't play any league games but lost in the cup 3-1 away at Wightlink Raiders and at home to Swindon Wildcats EPL.

Solent Devils shut out Cardiff Devils 5-0 on Sunday, having just lost out 6-5 away at Bracknell Hornets  the night before.

In the other games of the weekend, London Raiders lost 2-3 at home to Milton Keynes Thunder and Oxford City Stars lost 4-10 at home to Wightlink Raiders.

Cardiff, Oxford and London Raiders are all on 8 points at the foot of the table, having played 20, 21 and 22 games respectively.

Laidler Conference Weekend Round Up - 3rd & 4th January

Sheffield Senators had the best weekend with 2 wins - 7-4 away and then 7-2 at home in a double header with Blackburn Eagles - but Telford Tigers also picked 4 points as their 4-4 draw away at Hull Jets on Sunday counted for double points.

The previous night the Tigers has beaten Widnes Wild 2-0 at home for what was their FOURTH shut-out of the season so far!

Hull also had an unbeaten weekend as they beast bottom team Bradford Bulldogs 4-7 away on Saturday night and the other Laidler game of the weekend saw Nottingham Lions beat Deeside Dragons 7-1.

Solihull Barons remain top despite having not had a game at the weekend and have games in hand over the chasing pack.  The battle for second place is currently between Sheffield Senators and Telford Tigers with the actual positions depending on the EIHA decision about the postponed Telford v Coventry game on 27th December.

Moralee Conference Weekend Round Up - 3rd & 4th January

League leaders Blackburn Hawks had to rely on a last minute equaliser to snatch a 4-4 draw at home to Sheffield Spartans to maintain their unbeaten record.  Second placed Solway Sharks made up ground on the leaders with a 5-4 win over Billingham Stars on Saturday but were unable to capitalise further on the Hawks' dropped point by crashing to a 5-3 defeat away at Whitley Warriors on Sunday.

The Warriors were leading 5-0 on 45 mins and the Sharks' fightback when it came was too little too late.

In the other Moralee game of the weekend, Sutton Sting won 9-6 away at bottom team Manchester Minotaurs.

With almost everybody beating everybody else at present, the league table makes for some fascinating viewing. The Hawks still lead with 20 points from 11 games and Solway are in second with 14 points from 12 games.  Sheffield and Whitley are next with 12 points apiece and then Sutton and Billingham both have 11 points, meaning that places 3 to 6 are separated by just 1 point.
