The Sheffield Steelstings picked up their first win of the season – and, indeed, scored their first goals of the 2024 campaign - with a 3-1 win over Cardiff Huskies at iceSheffield on Saturday.
The Huskies were
short-benched and missing a number of regular players and the Steelstings were
able to take full advantage.
Team captain Russ
Clarke opened the scoring for the hosts just two minutes into the game and the
score remained 1-0 at the first interval. The second period was goal-less and a
strike from Jack Grocock early in the third doubled the Steelstings advantage.
Shannon Couch pulled
a goal back for Cardiff on 41 minutes to set up a tense finale but Sheffield
made sure of the win with a second goal from Grocock with 2 ½ minutes left to
play.
It was a good weekend
for Sheffield all round as the first team – the Steelkings – won another nail
bitingly close encounter 2-3 away to Manchester Mayhem to put daylight in the
league table between themselves and their cross Pennine rivals.
Connor Grocock put
the Steelkings ahead on 4 minutes but goals from Karl Nicholson and Dean Lahan
saw the Mayhem leading 2-1 at the first break.
After a goalless
second period, a second goal from Grocock levelled the score and Jake Oakley
fired in the winner in the 40th minute.
The weekend results
mean that Peterborough Phantoms – who were
without a game - remain top of the league table with 4 wins from their 4
games. Cardiff remain second with 3 from
4 but the Steelkings are now just 2 points behind them.
This weekend sees
another double helping of Sheffield Para action as the Steelstings host the
Mayhem at iceSheffield on Saturday 6th July and the Steelkings are
at home to Cardiff on Sunday. Both games
face off at 4.50pm.
