Second place Whitley Warriors kept up the pressure, however,
with a 4-point weekend of their own – winning 3-4 away at Sutton Sting on
Saturday and then beating North East rivals Billingham Stars 3-1 at home the
next night.
With just 7 games left to play in the league campaign (4 of
them at home), the Hawks lead the table by 5 points, with the Warriors having
one extra game in hand.
Billingham Stars’ 3-4 win away at Sheffield Spartans on
Saturday lifted them above Telford Tigers into 4th place – the first
time they have occupied a play-off spot this season.
In the other Moralee game of the weekend, Solway Sharks won 1-9 away at bottom team Sheffield Senators to round off a weekend of gloom for the iceSheffield based teams who were unable to notch up a single win between them across the 4 games they featured in. Captain Struan Tonnar hit 3+1 and Martin Cingel contributed 2+2 in what was the Sharks’ 4th win out of the 5 games they played in January.
Whether this signifies a late challenge for a play-off spot remains to be seen - although they do have two games extra to play following cancellations due to the bad weather before Christmas.
