Saturday 17th May 2025 – British Para Ice Hockey League: Cardiff Huskies 6 – Mayhem 4

The Mayhem sledge team put in a battling performance in their first game of the new British Para Ice Hockey League season but narrowly lost out 6-4 away to defending champions Cardiff Huskies in the Welsh capital on Saturday.

This game saw a playing debut for Fiona Naylor – wife of Mayhem player Tony Naylor – who only took up the sport recently, and a first game in goal for Daniel Hartshorn who has switched roles, having previously played outfield.

The Mayhem got off to a flying start and opened the scoring on 3 minutes with a goal from GB international player Karl Nicholson. Cardiff equalised 3 minutes later with a strike from their GB forward Tyler Christopher but another goal from Nicholson on 12 minutes saw the Mayhem leading 1-2 at the first period break.

The second period continued in similar vein with the Mayhem playing out of their skins, having more of the play and out-shooting their lofty hosts.   A third Nicholson goal on 16 minutes edged them further ahead but a second strike for Christopher kept the Huskies in contention.

Nicholson fired in his 4th goal of the game on 22 minutes and the score remained 2-4 to the Mayhem at the second interval.

Cardiff eventually made their numerical advantage in players count in the third period – with the Mayhem having travelled with a very short bench - and four unanswered goals – three more from Christopher and one for Jon le Galloudec, another GB international, saw them overhaul the visitors and secure their first win of the season.

Despite the closeness of the game, it was played in a very good spirit throughout and no penalties were awarded to either side. The MVP awards went to Daniel May for Cardiff and Karl Nicholson for the Mayhem.

The Mayhem are next in action Sunday 8th June when they take on Sheffield B team, the SteelStings, at Planet Ice Widnes, 4.30pm face off.
