Saturday 21st June 2025 – Summer Classic Cup: Don Valley Vikings 5 – Connah’s Quay Cobras 2

The Connah’s Quay Cobras put in a battling performance away to the Don Valley Vikings in the Elite Group of the Summer Classic Cup but ultimately lost out 5-2 in Sheffield on Saturday.

The game was very close in its early stages and the Vikings scored the only goal of the first period on 6 minutes.

A goal from Cobras’ Simon Soltes levelled the score on 28 minutes and the match remained at a very finely poised 1-1 heading into the third period.

Don Valley edged back in front on 44 minutes and two further goals on 53 and 56 minutes gave them a commanding lead.

Undaunted, the Cobras continued to push forward and were eventually rewarded with a second Soltes goal with just 44 seconds remaining on the clock.  It was too late by then to spark much of a comeback but the Vikings found time to add insult to injury with a goal of their own 15 seconds from the end to secure a 5-2 win.

Despite the disappointing result, netminder Paul Jones put in a good performance in the Connah’s Quay goal and was named MVP for his efforts.

The result means that Don Valley Viking remain unbeaten at the top of the group, with the Cobras still looking good for a second place finish.

However, they face a tricky road trip away to face Whitley Bay Islanders in their last group game on Saturday 2nd August.

Depending on other results in the meantime, that game could be a straight decider as to which team takes the runners-up spot in the group and qualifies for the play offs.
